OFF THE MENU: Fig and Arugula Salad

INSPIRATION: The Spotted Pig (West Village, Manhattan)

"I'm ready for my close-up."

The Spotted Pig—the quintessential example of that recent phenomenon known as the "gastropub"—is possibly the only restaurant that can seem at one moment an English pub, the next an Italian wine bar, and yet feel so coherent. Quirkily named English dishes like "Angels on Horseback" share the menu with their (justifiably) famed ricotta-filled gnudi. I haven't had the burger, but it looks fabulous.

This salad is inspired by one Brian and I had at The Spotted Pig, as a special, a few weeks ago.

Arugula, figs, Parmigiano, pine nuts. Dressing: olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt & pepper.

A simple but addictive combination of sweet, salty, a hint of bitterness from the arugula, and that distinctive flavor of the pine nuts. Definitely a keeper.
