Pomegranate Champagne Cocktail

Say what you will about candy-colored cocktails—oh, that they're for sissies, lightweights, or that pathetically out-of-touch segment of the population that's just discovered "Sex and the City" on TBS—but you must concede there is one time of year that calls for drinks that are fun, a bit frivolous, and dressed in festive hues. Happily for all of us, that time of year is precisely . . . now.

A holiday twist on the Champagne Cocktail—my drink of choice at Angel's Share in the East Village—this red, sparkly, and delightfully quaffable Pomegranate Champagne Cocktail is a libation that reflects the merriment and joy of the holiday season. It's fresh, but with a classic pedigree. And it is a worthy candidate for a Christmas Eve toast or even for ringing in the new year.

"Drinks for a Festive Occasion" is the theme for this month's Mixology Monday, hosted by The Spirit World. I think my Pomegranate Champagne cocktail fits the bill—hopefully you will, too.

POMEGRANATE CHAMPAGNE COCKTAIL

1 sugar cube
Orange Bitters
1 ounce pomegranate juice
Dry champagne
Orange peel, for garnish

Wet sugar cube with a few drops of the orange bitters. Drop cube into a champagne glass. Pour in pomegranate juice and top with champagne. Garnish with a length of twisted orange peel.
